I got the idea for these pumpkins from a baby blanket!
The yarn used for these pumpkins was originally for a baby blanket. I love Breathe Deep Super Bulky Yarn by Yarn Bee because it’s that perfect blend of firm and soft. The fibers don’t separate at all, and they are a nice amount of stretchy.
Materials Needed
- One skein of super bulky, in each color you desire (the pumpkins barely use any of the skein, so there’s plenty for multiple of each color)
- 8mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Sturdy twigs from the yard
- Fiberfill + old, clean socks (We put the fiberfill in the socks, because the fpdcs in this project tend to leave wide gaps.) I recommend using socks that are roughly the same color as the yarn in case they do peek through the little gaps.
- Twine
- Glue (for securing the twig inside the pumpkin)

- Width/height = 4in by 3in
- Gauge = not critical for this project
Notes/Further Instructions
- You will be working continuously around, which means instead of slip stitching to the beginning of the round, you will simply start with the 1st stitch. I recommend using a stitch marker and placing it in the 1st st of each round for this reason.
- For the decreases, you’ll be beginning the dc2tog in a sc, and then finishing it in the next fpdc
- All scs are worked using the yarn under method
- Instead of wrapping the yarn over your hook, wrap the hook around the yarn so that it’s underneath. This is a great technique for amigurumi because it uses less yarn and creates a tighter stitch.
Let’s crochet some pumpkins!
Round 1: 12dc in MR. (12 sts)
Round 2: Sc in 1st st, fpdc around post of same st, *sc, fpdc around post of same st* around (24 sts)
Round 3: *Sc, fpdc around next st* around (24 sts)
Rounds 4-7: Rep round 3 (24 sts)

Round 8: Dc2tog around, beginning each dc in a sc and completing it in the next fpdc from last round. (12 sts)
Stuff the pumpkin here–fill an old sock or two with fiberfill. Make sure not to overstuff, or you’ll stretch out the stitches too much.
Round 9: Stuff a 3.5in twig as deeply as possible into the pumpkin, inside the sock (we don’t want it poking out the bottom!). Apply glue around the stick right under where we will cinch the top in.
Round 10: Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing top shut. Using a tapestry needle, weave the yarn through the front loops only of the stitches, and cinch closed around the twig.
Round 11: Wrap twine around the pumpkin from the base to the stem, dividing it into sections. Repeat evenly around the pumpkin, pulling the twine snug to create the pumpkin’s characteristic ridges. Tie off at the stem.
