My first ever design, this cute bandana came about because of my larger-than-average skull! XD
For years I searched for a headband that was both pretty and actually stayed on my head, but between my larger-than-average skull and my slippery, fine hair, I got frustrated time and time again.
After I had been crocheting a few years, I saw one of my friends wearing a bandana, and the idea came to me to try to make my own. After several attempts, learning the diamond mesh stitch, having friends test the pattern, and one of those friends taking pictures of the final product, I published this in early 2026. And now it’s here, ready for you to make one of your own!
Materials Needed
- 2.5mm hook
- Artiste Cotton Size 8 Crochet Thread
- Darning Needle

Let’s Make a Bandana!
Ch 51. (If you need to adjust the width, just make sure your total numer of chains is a multiple of 4 + 3.)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook, *ch 5, skip 2 st, sc in next st*–continue until 2 sts remain, ch 1, sc in last. (You should have 16 diamonds.)
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in ch sp, ch 5, sc in 1st diamond, ch 5, *sc in next diamond, ch 5* until end of row, sc in 3rd ch of last ch-5 sp. (16 diamonds)
Row 3: Turn, ch 5, sc in 1st diamond, ch 5, *sc in next diamond, ch 5* until end of row, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp. (16 diamonds)
Row 4: Repeat Row 2 (16 diamonds)
Row 5: Repeat Row 3 (16 diamonds)
Row 6 *decrease row*: Turn, ch 1, sc in ch sp, ch 5, skip 1st diamond, *sc in next diamond, ch 5* until 2 diamonds remain, skip next diamond, sc in 3rd ch of last ch-5 sp. (14 diamonds)
Row 7: Repeat Row 3 (14 diamonds)
Row 8: Repeat Row 2 (14 diamonds)
Row 9: Repeat Row 3 (14 diamonds)
Row 10: Repeat Row 6 (12 diamonds)

Row 19: Turn, ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, sc in diamond, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch of last ch-5 (2 diamonds)
Row 20: Turn, ch 3, slip st into ch-1 space from previous row
Picot Border
Row 1: Ch 1. Sc into same st, sc into each st around. (At each corner, place a *sc, ch 2, sc* into same corner st.) Sl st into 1st sc.
Row 2: *Ch 3, sc into back bump of 1st ch, sc in next st around the bandana, (in corners: sc, ch 3, sc ito back bump of 1st ch), sl st into 2nd ch of 1st picot.
Strings
Row 1: Join yarn at one of the top corners. Ch 1, sc into same st, then ch 55.
Row 2: Turn, sc into 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each st across. Sl st a couple of times into the bandana for stability. Fasten off.
Repeat at opposite corner. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
